INEC Endorses Wike-Aligned PDP Officials Amid Party Power Struggle

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has formally acknowledged a new faction of the National Working Committee (NWC) of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), aligned with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike, in a development that marks a major turn in the party’s ongoing leadership crisis.

The electoral body reflected the change on its official website, naming Abdulrahman Mohammed as the National Chairman of the party. Mohammed emerged alongside other members of the NWC at a national convention held on Sunday at the velodrome of the Moshood Abiola National Stadium in Abuja.

The recognition comes at a time when the PDP remains sharply divided, with two opposing factions laying claim to the party’s leadership structure. One of the groups, led by Kabiru Turaki, had approached the Supreme Court in a bid to stop the Wike-backed camp from holding the convention.

Despite the legal action, the convention went ahead as scheduled, resulting in the emergence of a full list of new national officers.

Speaking during the convention, Wike declared that the PDP had successfully navigated a prolonged internal crisis that once threatened its existence. He attributed the outcome to the resilience of party members who, according to him, reclaimed the party’s structure and reinforced internal democracy.

Wike also stated that members resisted attempts to divide the party along ethnic and regional lines, insisting that the PDP has now been “returned to its rightful owners — the people.”

He further commended grassroots supporters for standing by the party during turbulent periods, noting that despite what he described as the “infidelity of opportunistic elite,” ordinary members remained committed to the party’s survival.

INEC-Recognised PDP National Working Committee (NWC) list as shown below:

  • Abdulrahman Mohammed — National Chairman

  • Aaron Chukwuemeka — Deputy National Chairman (South)

  • Yusufu Akirikwen — Deputy National Chairman (North)

  • Anyanwu Samuel — National Secretary

  • Kolawale Olabisi — Deputy National Secretary

  • Odeyemi Oladiran — National Treasurer

  • Lado Marke — Deputy National Treasurer

  • Eyim Henry — National Financial Secretary

  • Adaba Seri Yatu — Deputy National Auditor

  • Ogunshe Adedayo — National Women Leader

  • Hauwa Shinge — Deputy National Women Leader

The latest development underscores the deepening internal divisions within the PDP as competing factions continue to battle for control of the party’s leadership structure ahead of future political contests.
