NYSC Official Arraigned Over Corps Member’s Death, Granted N500,000 Bail in Ogun

The Local Government Inspector (LGI) of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) in Abeokuta South Local Government Area, Abass Olalekan, has been arraigned before a Magistrate Court sitting in Isabo, Ogun State, over the death of a corps member, Victoria Ariyo.

Olalekan, 43, was arrested and charged following the death of Ariyo, who served under the Abeokuta South LGA. She was reported to have died from pregnancy-related complications.

Sources alleged that the LGI was involved in a romantic relationship with the deceased, which led to a pregnancy and a subsequent termination that resulted in her death.

The defendant was brought before the presiding magistrate, Mrs A.K. Araba, on Monday on a two-count charge bordering on conspiracy and attempt to procure abortion. He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charges.

According to the charge sheet (MA/22/99/2026), the prosecution alleged that Olalekan and others at large conspired between January and March 2026 at the Ikereku area, Laderin, Abeokuta, within the Abeokuta Magisterial District, to commit a felony abortion contrary to Section 516 of the Criminal Code Laws of Ogun State, 2006.

The second count alleged that he unlawfully attempted to procure an abortion by supplying drugs to the deceased, Victoria Olapeju Ariyo, an offence punishable under Section 230 of the same law.

Defence counsel, Elizabeth Adelabu, applied for bail on behalf of the accused, noting that the charges are bailable.

Ruling on the application, Magistrate Araba granted the defendant bail in the sum of N500,000 with two sureties in like sum. She stipulated that one surety must be a blood relative, while the other must be gainfully employed.

The court further directed that the sureties must provide a utility bill, swear to an affidavit of means, submit six passport photographs, and present evidence of 2026 tax payment to the Ogun State Government.

Pending the fulfilment of the bail conditions, the magistrate ordered that Olalekan be remanded at the Ibara Correctional Centre.

The case was adjourned until April 14, 2026, for further hearing.
