The Director-General of the National Youth Service Corps (NYSC), Olakunle Nafiu, has called on employers of corps members across Nigeria to prioritise mentorship, stressing that proper guidance will help shape them into responsible future leaders.
Nafiu made the appeal while hosting the Director-General of the Securities and Exchange Commission Nigeria (SEC), Emomotimi Agama, and his delegation at the NYSC headquarters in Abuja.
The visit culminated in the signing of a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between both agencies aimed at promoting financial literacy among corps members nationwide.
Speaking during the event, Nafiu emphasised the critical role employers play in shaping the future of young graduates posted to their organisations. He noted that positive engagement, mentorship, and support would not only benefit the individuals but also contribute to national development.
“The way you relate with them, build and mentor them will greatly impact their future and the nation,” he said, describing corps members as resilient, committed, and eager to contribute meaningfully when given the right support.
The NYSC boss also commended Agama’s leadership at the SEC, noting that his administration has helped transform Nigeria’s capital market landscape and strengthened public confidence in the system. He reaffirmed the scheme’s readiness to collaborate, adding that the partnership would benefit corps members, both institutions, and the wider public.
Earlier, Agama praised the NYSC for its longstanding contributions to national unity, integration, and socio-economic development. He highlighted the scheme’s nationwide reach, noting that its deployment structure remains unmatched by any other government agency.
He stressed the importance of equipping corps members with financial knowledge, stating that such education would empower them to achieve financial independence and prepare them for leadership roles.
According to him, corps members also serve as effective channels for spreading financial literacy to grassroots communities, thereby amplifying the impact of the initiative.
Reflecting on his own service year, Agama expressed enthusiasm about the collaboration, describing it as a strategic step toward enhancing the value and impact of the NYSC programme in Nigeria.
