Police Deny Disbandment of Tactical Units, Order Reduction and Restructuring Nationwide

The Nigeria Police Force has debunked reports claiming that the Inspector-General of Police, Olatunji Disu, ordered the disbandment of all tactical units across state commands, describing the publication as a misrepresentation of his directive.

In a statement issued by the Force Public Relations Officer, DCP Anthony Okon Placid, the Police clarified that the IGP did not dissolve the units but instead ordered a strategic reduction and restructuring of tactical teams nationwide.

According to the statement, the IGP, who acknowledged public concerns over the operations of tactical teams, expressed unease about the proliferation of such units by Commissioners of Police and heads of formations. He noted that the unchecked expansion has led to manpower shortages at Police Divisions and Posts, as well as issues affecting the integrity of the Force due to the excesses of poorly supervised teams.

Drawing from his extensive experience in command positions across the country, the IGP reaffirmed the importance of tactical teams in crime-fighting but stressed the need for proper regulation and oversight.

To address the challenges, the IGP directed that tactical teams at Zonal and State Command levels be reduced to a maximum of five, while those at Area Command and Divisional levels should not exceed three. He noted that this could be achieved through the merging or disbandment of units at the discretion of heads of formations.

The directive, however, excludes state government-established outfits such as Lagos State’s Rapid Response Squad (RRS), Oyo State’s Special Response Squad (SRS), and Bayelsa State’s Operation DOO-AKPOR, as well as similar units nationwide.

The IGP stated that the restructuring is aimed at freeing up personnel to strengthen Police Stations, improve supervision, and address public complaints regarding the conduct of tactical teams.

Reiterating his commitment to accountability and a people-friendly police force, the IGP said the move is part of broader efforts to enhance operational efficiency and rebuild public trust.
