The Lagos State Government has scaled up its Hope for Digital Education initiative with the distribution of smart learning devices and core textbooks to public secondary school students across the state, reinforcing its commitment to modern, inclusive education.
Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu said the initiative is designed to expand access to quality education and equip students with the tools needed to thrive in a technology-driven world.
“We are enabling access, opportunity, and a future where every child can learn, grow, and succeed,” the governor stated.
The programme, implemented by the Lagos State Ministry of Basic and Secondary Education, forms a key component of the third pillar of the administration’s T.H.E.M.E.S agenda, which prioritises education and technology as drivers of a 21st-century economy. It also aligns with the Renewed Hope Agenda of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, with a focus on human capital development and educational excellence.
According to the ministry’s Public Relations Officer, Elias Olawale, the initiative has evolved from a pandemic-era intervention into a structured, statewide reform programme.
Under the leadership of the Commissioner for Basic and Secondary Education, Jamiu Alli-Balogun, the government has integrated digital tools with traditional learning methods to enhance student outcomes.
“Our goal is to combine technological innovation with foundational literacy to ensure that Lagos students not only learn but thrive in the 21st century,” Alli-Balogun said.
The newly distributed Hope Digital Learning Tablets are equipped with data-enabled SIM cards and powered by the Roducate platform, providing access to curriculum-based lessons, educational videos, mock examinations and life skills content. When paired with simplified core textbooks, the initiative ensures continuous access to high-quality learning resources both inside and outside the classroom.
Early indicators suggest positive outcomes. Public secondary school students recorded an 80 per cent pass rate in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination conducted by the West African Examinations Council in 2021, with expectations of improved performance as the programme expands.
With over 600,000 students projected to benefit, the initiative promotes inclusive education while incorporating performance-based incentives for students, teachers and parents.
Through this integrated approach, the Lagos State Government continues to position itself as a national benchmark for educational innovation and excellence.
