President Bola Ahmed Tinubu and First Lady Oluremi Tinubu departed Abuja on Tuesday for a landmark state visit to the United Kingdom, following an invitation from King Charles III and Queen Camilla.
The visit marks the first time in 37 years that a Nigerian leader will be received by a British monarch at Windsor Castle, highlighting renewed efforts to strengthen diplomatic and economic ties between both nations.
Key discussions during the visit are expected to centre on trade, investment, immigration, and cultural exchange. King Charles III will host President Tinubu and the First Lady at Windsor Castle, where activities will include a special Royal Collection exhibition showcasing Nigeria’s cultural heritage.
The itinerary also features private bilateral talks, as well as engagements with organisations promoting interfaith dialogue. The visit will culminate in a State Banquet held in honour of the Nigerian delegation.
President Tinubu is further scheduled to meet with British Prime Minister Keir Starmer at 10 Downing Street. The meeting is expected to yield several Memoranda of Understanding covering trade, defence, investment, and cultural cooperation.
A major highlight of the trip is a £746 million financing agreement between UK Export Finance and Nigeria. The deal will support the refurbishment of the Lagos Port Complex (Apapa Quays) and Tin Can Island Port critical infrastructure projects aimed at enhancing Nigeria’s maritime trade capacity.
In addition, the president will attend a Nigerian Modernism exhibition showcasing contemporary art and participate in a reception with business leaders and members of the Nigerian diaspora, further deepening economic and cultural relations between both countries.
