Chelsea manager Thomas Tuchel has defended Declan Rice and Bukayo Saka, insisting both were eager to represent England against Japan after the Arsenal stars withdrew from the squad ahead of Tuesday’s friendly.
Rice and Saka were absent from England’s 1-1 draw with Uruguay on Friday, having joined Tuchel’s group later than their teammates to allow rest. They were among five players who pulled out on Saturday, including Arsenal colleague Noni Madueke. In total, ten Arsenal players have recently withdrawn from international duty, sparking speculation over the club prioritizing its treble bid over friendlies.
Arsenal currently lead the Premier League by nine points and remain in contention for both the Champions League and FA Cup.
Despite the withdrawals, Tuchel emphasized that Rice and Saka were eager to play in England’s final friendlies before the World Cup in June and July.
“They joined, had a medical assessment, and wanted desperately to play, to just get the narrative straight. They wanted to be involved,” Tuchel told reporters on Monday.
“However, the risk of making their injuries worse was too high. Both were clearly in discomfort, so it made absolutely no sense for them to stay.”
Tuchel also commented on other absentees, including Adam Wharton of Crystal Palace, who withdrew due to discomfort rather than a major injury, and Manchester City defender John Stones, sidelined with a calf issue. Stones, who has only made five appearances for City since November, was “gutted” about the minor injury.
“He has a lot of credit with me in the bank. He remains a key player, whether as a starter or substitute,” Tuchel said.
Acknowledging the frustrations of multiple withdrawals, Tuchel praised the players’ commitment:
“It’s disappointing, but I’m not upset or angry with the players. Many of the injured players stayed to start their treatment here, which shows they want to be part of the group.”
