The University of Lagos (UNILAG) has officially rejected the strike announced by its branch of the Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU), stating that the union did not follow the proper procedures before declaring industrial action.
The ASUU UNILAG chapter had directed lecturers to halt academic activities starting Wednesday, March 11, citing incomplete payment of salaries and allowances for January and February. These payments reportedly include the full Consolidated Salary Structure for Academics, the Consolidated Academic Teaching Allowance, and the Professorial Allowance. ASUU Chairman, Prof. Idou Keinde, insisted that lecturers would not resume work until all outstanding payments are fully settled.
In response, UNILAG’s Head of Communication, Adejoke Alaga-Ibraheem, reassured the public that the university remains committed to staff welfare and is actively engaging with ASUU to resolve the financial concerns. She emphasized that the university is prioritizing the settlement of unpaid teaching allowances while adhering to proper administrative processes.
“The university continues to maintain dialogue with ASUU to ensure that staff welfare is addressed, while also minimizing disruption to students’ studies,” Alaga-Ibraheem said.
UNILAG confirmed that all scheduled examinations would proceed on Wednesday, March 11, as planned, highlighting the critical importance of this period for students preparing for internships, the Students’ Industrial Work Experience Scheme (SIWES), and future professional programs such as Law School. For any exams that had to be postponed, the university has made new arrangements, with remaining examinations resuming from Thursday, March 12, 2026.
The university management urged students, staff, and the wider university community to remain calm, stay focused on academic activities, and trust that discussions with ASUU are ongoing to achieve a satisfactory resolution for all parties.
