‘90% of Protests Are Sponsored’ — DeeOne Questions Credibility of Activism in Nigeria

Nigerian comedian DeeOne has stirred debate after claiming that the majority of protests in Nigeria are politically motivated rather than driven by genuine public interest.

Speaking on The Nigerian Meter, a podcast by Vanguard, the entertainer alleged that as much as 90 per cent of demonstrations across the country are sponsored by political actors pursuing personal or strategic agendas.

According to him, what often appears to be grassroots activism is, in many cases, influenced or funded by politicians, a trend he believes undermines the credibility of protest movements.

“In Nigeria, 90 per cent of protests are sponsored,” he said. “The day we have a genuine protest, we will all know.”

DeeOne also questioned the neutrality of some self-proclaimed activists, alleging that certain individuals are aligned with political interests and selectively speak on issues that serve those affiliations while ignoring others.

He warned that such practices weaken public trust and compromise the integrity of activism, stressing that true advocacy should remain independent of political influence.
