Nigeria’s Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, is set to resign from his position after receiving the approval of President Bola Tinubu to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State.
The development followed a meeting at the Presidential Villa, Abuja, where Adelabu briefed the president on his performance in the power sector over the past two and a half years.
According to a statement by his Special Adviser on Strategic Communications and Media Relations, Bolaji Tunji, the minister is expected to step down in the coming days as he prepares to join the Oyo governorship race.
During the meeting, Adelabu reportedly presented key milestones achieved under his leadership, including efforts to stabilise electricity generation, strengthen transmission infrastructure, and implement reforms aimed at improving efficiency across the power value chain.
A major highlight of the engagement was the presentation of the National Integrated Electricity Policy (NIEP) and its Strategic Implementation Plan, alongside a Medium- to Long-Term Integrated Resource Plan designed to guide the sector’s sustainability.
The NIEP, according to the statement, provides a roadmap for achieving energy security, expanding electricity access, integrating renewable energy, and building a more resilient power sector.
Tunji noted that the timing of Adelabu’s resignation reflects his commitment to ensuring continuity in ongoing reforms, particularly amid challenges such as gas supply constraints, pipeline repairs, and outstanding obligations to gas suppliers affecting electricity generation.
President Tinubu was said to have commended the minister for his efforts and the progress recorded, especially in laying a strong policy foundation for the sector.
“The President also granted his consent and blessing for the minister to pursue his governorship ambition in Oyo State,” the statement added.
Adelabu, in turn, expressed appreciation for the president’s support and reaffirmed his commitment to the continued development of Nigeria’s power sector.
The anticipated resignation aligns with an earlier directive by the president requiring all political appointees seeking elective office to step down ahead of their campaigns.
