The Department of State Services (DSS) on Thursday arraigned former Kaduna State Governor, Nasir El-Rufai, before the Federal High Court in Abuja over allegations of unlawfully accessing the telephone conversation of the National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu.
El-Rufai is facing a five-count amended charge, with the prosecution informing the court that the initial three-count charge had been expanded. Following the update, the trial judge, Joyce Abdulmalik, struck out the earlier counts.
At the hearing, the former governor pleaded not guilty to all five charges.
The case stems from remarks made by El-Rufai during a February interview on Prime Time on Arise Television, where he claimed that “someone wiretapped” Ribadu’s phone. According to him, the alleged interception enabled him to hear the NSA instructing security operatives to carry out his arrest.
The matter is expected to proceed to trial as the court continues hearing on the amended charges.
