‘I’ll Walk Away If Processes Are Compromised’ — Peter Obi Raises Concerns Over Internal Democracy in African Democratic Congress

Fresh concerns have surfaced within Nigeria’s African Democratic Congress (ADC) after former presidential candidate Peter Obi signalled he could reconsider his membership if internal party processes are undermined.

Speaking in an interview with Arise TV on Monday, Obi framed his political trajectory as one guided by principle rather than expediency, citing a consistent refusal to participate in practices he considers undemocratic.

Reflecting on his departure from the All Progressives Grand Alliance (APGA) to the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Obi explained that the move was prompted by governance concerns and disagreements with his successor in Anambra State.

“I moved from APGA to the PDP because of issues with my successor. Rather than allow it to become toxic and destructive to governance, I stepped aside,” he said.

However, Obi noted that his experience within the PDP presented similar challenges, alleging a culture marked by disregard for rules and what he described as transactional politics.

“People were not playing by the rules. It was transactional. I cannot be part of transactional primaries. I cannot be paying people to go and serve them,” he stated.

He added that his subsequent move to the Labour Party was driven by the same reformist ideals, though he suggested that systemic issues persisted across party lines.

Now aligned with the ADC, Obi warned that he remains vigilant. “If that process is again compromised, I will speak out. If I have to move 20 times, I will,” he said, reiterating his stance against electoral malpractice at all levels.

“I have never been involved in rigging at the primaries, during elections, or after,” he added.
