Nigerian singer-songwriter Omah Lay has ignited fresh debate within the global Afrobeats scene after declaring himself the defining artist of the decade, placing his artistry above chart performance and mainstream visibility.
In a recent interview with Capital XTRA, the “Bad Influence” and “Soso” hitmaker asserted his dominance with striking confidence, framing his claim around creative depth rather than commercial metrics.
“I am the greatest Afrobeats artist of the decade,” he said. “When it comes to making art, I’m the greatest.”
Addressing potential criticism, Omah Lay acknowledged that conventional measures such as streaming numbers, celebrity profile, and public persona may favour other leading figures in the genre, including Asake and Rema. However, he maintained that his evaluation rests firmly on artistic quality and musical expression.
“You can judge by numbers, personality, or fame, and maybe I won’t come out on top,” he said. “But when it comes to the art itself, I stand above the rest.”
