Senegalese-American singer Akon has ignited widespread debate after sharing provocative views on relationships, arguing that men are not naturally wired for monogamy.
Speaking during an interview with The Shade Room, the music star claimed that commitment to a single partner goes against what he described as men’s natural instincts.
“We’re not built to be committed. We’re natural beings… we populate because that’s how God created us,” he said. “So we can’t be committed to one… it’s not our thing. We’re not wired that way.”
Akon, however, drew a distinction between commitment and faithfulness, suggesting that while men may struggle with exclusivity, they can still maintain emotional loyalty to one partner.
According to him, faithfulness is about remaining emotionally attached and protective of a primary relationship, even in the face of external attraction or temptation.
His remarks have since triggered mixed reactions online, with critics challenging his generalisation of male behaviour, while others argue that his comments reflect a controversial but ongoing conversation around relationships, fidelity, and human nature.
