Nigerian music star Peter Okoye has responded sharply to critics questioning his decision to shift his birthday celebration from November 18 to November 30, describing the backlash as unnecessary and overblown.
The singer, popularly known as Mr P and formerly one half of the now-defunct P-Square, had earlier announced that he would no longer accept birthday wishes or gifts on his original birth date, stating that the decision was purely personal.
Reacting via X on Tuesday, Okoye expressed surprise at the intensity of public reactions, questioning why his private choice had sparked widespread debate.
“Una dey vex like say I cancel Christmas? Na my birthday date I move… no be your own, why e dey pain you?” he wrote, adding that even widely accepted dates like Christmas remain subjects of debate.
He further criticised what he described as misplaced priorities, suggesting that the attention surrounding his birthday shift was disproportionate compared to more pressing national issues.
“Funny how my birthday date shift is causing more pain than Nigeria’s real problems,” he added.
The singer also dismissed online insults, insisting they have no impact on his success.
“Insult no dey reduce success. Who don make am, don make am!” he stated.
Peter Okoye rose to fame alongside his twin brother as part of P-Square, one of Nigeria’s most successful music duos in the 2000s and early 2010s. The group experienced a highly publicised split in 2015 over management and royalty disputes, eventually disbanding in 2017.
Although the brothers reunited in 2021 and released music together, tensions later resurfaced, leading to renewed disagreements over financial and managerial issues.
Mr P has since continued his solo career, maintaining a strong presence in the Nigerian music scene.
