NDC Slams Orji Kalu Over Tinubu Economy Praise, Insists Opposition “Far From Dead”

The Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC) has faulted comments by Senate Chief Whip, Orji Uzor Kalu, describing his remarks on President Bola Tinubu’s economic reforms as misleading and detached from the realities facing Nigerians.

In a statement issued in Abuja on Thursday by its Deputy National Publicity Secretary, Abdulmumin Abdulsalam, the party also rejected Kalu’s assertion that opposition parties in Nigeria had lost relevance ahead of the 2027 general elections.

Kalu had recently expressed confidence that President Bola Tinubu would remain politically dominant in 2027, even as opposition groups intensify coalition discussions, with the African Democratic Congress emerging as a possible convergence platform.

On the economy, the Abia North senator acknowledged some macroeconomic improvements but stressed that the benefits of reforms were yet to fully reach ordinary Nigerians, noting that economic recovery is gradual.

However, the NDC dismissed his assessment, insisting that opposition forces were gaining strength rather than weakening.

“The momentum of the political bulwark being formed by the opposition will eventually defeat the ruling structure that seeks to undermine democracy through state capture and economic hardship,” Abdulsalam said.

The party further criticised Kalu’s support for the administration’s economic policies, describing it as inconsistent with the lived experiences of citizens.

It urged the senator to “speak truth to power” and better reflect the struggles of Nigerians amid rising insecurity and economic hardship.

The statement also rejected claims that opposition parties were “dead and buried,” insisting that they remain active and politically significant ahead of the next election cycle.
