Nigeria’s diplomatic community has been thrown into mourning following the death of Mohammed Mahmud Lele, the country’s ambassador-designate to Algeria, who passed away in Ankara, Türkiye, after a prolonged illness.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs confirmed his death in a statement issued on Wednesday in Abuja and signed by its spokesperson, Kimiebi Ebienfa. According to the ministry, Lele died in the early hours of April 19, 2026.

The statement described his passing as a monumental loss to Nigeria’s foreign service, noting that he was a dedicated and exemplary career diplomat who served the country with distinction.

Until his death, Lele was Director of the Middle East and Gulf Division at the Ministry of Foreign Affairs. He had recently been appointed by President Bola Tinubu as ambassador-designate to the People’s Democratic Republic of Algeria, following his confirmation by the Senate.

Born in Gamawa, Bauchi State, in 1976, Lele studied Economics at Bayero University, Kano. He joined the Nigerian Foreign Service in 2001 and served in various missions, including Berlin, Lomé, and Riyadh, where he earned a reputation for professionalism and commitment to duty.

The ministry noted that he was widely respected for his intellectual depth, strategic insight, and dedication to advancing Nigeria’s foreign policy objectives.

Upon the arrival of his remains at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja, the Permanent Secretary of the ministry, Dunoma Ahmed, described him as a “hardworking, humble and fine officer” whose contributions would be deeply missed.

His burial took place on Wednesday in Kano in accordance with Islamic rites.

The ministry extended condolences to his family, colleagues, and the government and people of Bauchi State, praying for the peaceful repose of his soul and strength for those he left behind.
