The Nigeria Police Force in Ogun State has confirmed the rescue of five students of Gateway Polytechnic Sapade who were abducted by yet-to-be-identified gunmen.
In a statement issued by the Command’s spokesperson, Oluseyi Babaseyi, the students were kidnapped on April 27, 2026, at about 11:55 p.m., with the incident initially reported at the Ipara Division.
According to the statement, police operatives who visited the scene discovered an abandoned ash-coloured Toyota vehicle riddled with bullet holes and stained with blood. Mobile phones and other personal belongings were also recovered.
Further examination led to the discovery of a student identity card belonging to one of the victims, confirming that the occupants of the vehicle were students of the institution.
“This development necessitated the immediate escalation of the incident and activation of a full-scale rescue operation,” Babaseyi said.
Following the report, the Ogun State Commissioner of Police, Bode Ojajuni, ordered the deployment of tactical units and directed an intelligence-led operation to rescue the victims.
Operatives from the Isara Area Command, Ipara Division, SWAT, Anti-Kidnapping Unit, Violent Crime Response Unit (VCRU), Quick Response Squad (QRS), and OP MESA were mobilised for coordinated bush combing and tracking operations along suspected escape routes.
The sustained pressure from security forces led to the successful rescue of the five victims on April 28, 2026.
“The victims were immediately evacuated, debriefed, and taken for medical attention due to conditions sustained while in captivity,” the statement added.
During the operation, the kidnappers engaged security operatives in a gun duel but were overpowered by superior firepower, forcing them to flee with suspected gunshot wounds. No casualties were recorded among the security personnel.
The Commissioner of Police commended the professionalism and swift coordination of the operatives, noting that the intelligence-driven approach was key to the success of the mission.
He also assured that ongoing bush combing operations are aimed at tracking and apprehending the fleeing suspects.
The command urged members of the public to remain vigilant and report any suspicious activities through its emergency lines.
