A member of the African Democratic Congress (ADC) National Legislators’ Forum, Kasimu Maigari, has claimed that former Labour Party presidential candidate, Peter Obi, has set the Igbo political ambition for the presidency back by 20 years.
Maigari made the assertion on Monday during an interview on Arise Television, where he argued that Obi’s political movement has not advanced the long-standing aspiration of the South-East region to produce Nigeria’s next president. Instead, he said it has created a significant setback.
“Peter Obi has pushed Igbos 20 years backwards from getting the presidency. My worry is not if Peter Obi will win the presidency; my worry is that Peter Obi has pushed Igbos 20 years backwards from getting the presidency,” Maigari said.
He further stated that many supporters of Obi and former Kano State governor, Rabiu Kwankwaso, are motivated more by personal political interests than by ideological commitment.
According to him, a large number of Obi’s followers are mainly interested in securing elective positions such as state assembly seats, House of Representatives memberships, or governorship tickets, using the movement’s popularity as a political platform.
