Jonathan Says He Will Consult Widely on 2027 Presidential Race

Former Nigerian President Goodluck Jonathan has stated that he will consult widely before deciding whether to contest the 2027 presidential election.

Jonathan made the remark on Thursday while addressing a group of supporters who visited his office in Abuja to urge him to return to the presidential race.

The supporters expressed concerns about the future of the country and appealed to the former president to contest the 2027 election.

According to them, “Because of our genuine fear of Nigeria’s possible collapse, we decided to march to your office again, hoping you will receive us and make a statement that will gladden our hearts and the entire nation.”

They further claimed to have over 10 million supporters nationwide drawn from different ethnic groups, political parties, and age categories, insisting that many Nigerians want Jonathan to return to leadership.

The group also urged him to immediately obtain a presidential nomination form from any political party of his choice ahead of the election.

Responding to the appeals, Jonathan stressed the importance of patriotism, peace, and credible elections in sustaining Nigeria’s democracy.

“It’s only patriotic citizens that build their nations. Unpatriotic citizens will destroy their nation and take the money elsewhere to enjoy themselves,” he said.

The former president emphasized that peace remains the most important factor for national development and urged young Nigerians to continue advocating for peaceful and credible elections.

“The key thing we need in this country is peace,” Jonathan stated, adding that without credible elections, many competent citizens would avoid participating in politics.

He encouraged young people to remain actively involved in the electoral process, especially through voting, noting that they have a major role to play in shaping the future of the country.

Jonathan also revealed that he has participated in election observation missions in more than 14 African countries, some on multiple occasions.

Speaking further, he cautioned that presidential contests should not be taken lightly.

“Presidential race is not a computer game. But I heard you. And I will consult widely,” he said.

Jonathan added that his ultimate hope is for young Nigerians to build a nation that future generations would be proud of.
