LASU Emerges Most Preferred University in 2026 JAMB Applications

Lagos State University has emerged as the most preferred institution among candidates who applied for admission through the 2026 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, according to statistics released at the ongoing policy meeting organised by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board in Abuja on Monday.

The statistics, displayed to journalists and representatives of tertiary institutions during the meeting, showed that LASU recorded 84,426 first-choice applications, representing 3.76 per cent of the total applications submitted nationwide.

The University of Lagos came second with 78,240 applications, while Obafemi Awolowo University secured third position with 60,370 applications.

The University of Ibadan ranked fourth with 58,895 applications, followed by the University of Benin with 55,425 applications.

Nnamdi Azikiwe University occupied the sixth spot with 54,085 applications, while the University of Ilorin recorded 52,514 applications to place seventh.

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka, attracted 51,660 applications, while the Federal University Oye-Ekiti and the University of Port Harcourt completed the top 10 with 48,272 and 48,199 applications respectively.

The data also revealed changing trends in candidates’ admission preferences over the years.

LASU, which currently occupies the top position, was absent from the top 10 rankings in some previous admission cycles. Meanwhile, UNILAG maintained a consistent presence among the leading institutions, while universities such as UNILORIN, OAU, UI and FUOYE also continued to attract large numbers of applicants over the years.

JAMB further noted that some universities that previously dominated the rankings dropped positions in 2026, reflecting shifting admission choices among UTME candidates.
