Senegalese-American singer Akon has challenged the widespread belief that successful musicians are automatically wealthy, arguing that many artists struggle financially despite projecting images of luxury and success.
Speaking during an interview with Hip Hop Eye, the music star said the glamorous lifestyles often displayed in music videos and on social media do not always reflect the true financial realities of many performers in the industry.
According to Akon, while the music business can be highly profitable, the biggest financial rewards often go to executives and professionals working behind the scenes rather than the artists who attract public attention.
He explained that musicians are frequently the last people to receive payment from revenue generated within the industry, despite being the most visible and celebrated figures. As a result, he said, fame does not necessarily guarantee financial security.
“In the music industry, the artist is the last to get paid. He is the broke one but he is the most famous. If you want to be broke and famous, be the artist,” Akon said while discussing the economics of the entertainment business.
The singer advised aspiring professionals to explore other areas of the music industry where earning potential may be greater. He identified roles such as producer, songwriter, manager, agent and attorney as lucrative career paths, noting that there are numerous opportunities within the entertainment sector to build substantial wealth beyond performing as an artist.
