Human rights lawyer and activist Deji Adeyanju has raised concerns over reported plans by former President Goodluck Jonathan to return to active presidential politics ahead of the 2027 general elections, warning that the move could expose him to Nigeria’s fragile political environment.
In an open letter dated June 3, 2026, Adeyanju said Jonathan’s possible participation in the race could place him in a highly divided and unpredictable political climate. The letter was made available to journalists on Wednesday.
While expressing respect for the former president, Adeyanju said a return to frontline politics at this stage may not serve Jonathan’s legacy positively. He noted that his comments were driven by admiration for Jonathan’s leadership style and democratic values.
“I write to you as a well-wisher and someone who has long admired your leadership style and your commitment to democratic values. It is precisely from that place of respect that I feel compelled to say candidly that the growing conversations around your intended return to active presidential politics are worrying,” he said.
Adeyanju warned that Nigeria’s current political atmosphere remains unstable and could complicate any renewed presidential bid. He also cautioned that the electoral process could generate controversies capable of affecting Jonathan’s international reputation and statesmanlike image.
He advised the former president to step back from electoral ambition and instead continue serving as an elder statesman, offering guidance and counsel. “For these reasons, I sincerely hope you will consider stepping away from any such ambition and continue to serve in the higher role of an elder statesman on the continent,” he added. The development comes amid reports of internal discussions within the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) regarding Jonathan’s possible candidacy ahead of 2027.
