Media personality Sola Kuti has argued that Nigeria’s persistent challenges stem more from a flawed political system than from the individuals who occupy leadership positions. Speaking during a discussion on the country’s political landscape, Kuti maintained that meaningful progress would remain difficult unless the underlying structure of governance is reformed.
Drawing a comparison between former Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi and late former President Muhammadu Buhari, Kuti said many Nigerians may be placing the same level of hope in Obi that they once placed in Buhari before he assumed office. According to him, Buhari was widely celebrated and seen as a leader capable of tackling corruption and steering the country in a better direction.
However, Kuti noted that the expectations surrounding Buhari were ultimately not met during his administration. He argued that the former president’s tenure demonstrated how difficult it is for any leader to deliver meaningful change within a dysfunctional system.
“Peter Obi, for me, is just another Buhari,” Kuti stated, explaining that his comparison was based on the high expectations supporters have placed on both men rather than their personalities or political ideologies.
He further stressed that even leaders with good intentions often find themselves constrained by entrenched interests and systemic obstacles once they assume office. According to him, the existing political structure limits the ability of elected officials to implement far-reaching reforms, regardless of their personal convictions.
Kuti questioned how Buhari, whom many considered a principled figure, was unable to achieve significant reforms despite serving as president. He concluded that Nigeria’s political problems are rooted primarily in the structure of governance itself, insisting that focusing solely on individual leaders will not address the deeper issues affecting the country.
