The Kogi State Government has confirmed the abduction of 24 persons from an orphanage in the state, including 23 pupils and the wife of the proprietor.
Authorities disclosed that although the orphanage was not registered with the government, rescue operations have already led to the recovery of 15 of the victims.
The State Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo, made this known in a statement issued on Monday, describing the incident, which occurred on Sunday, as both unfortunate and avoidable.
“Fifteen pupils have been rescued following the swift intervention of security agencies, while efforts are ongoing to secure the release of the remaining victims,” he stated.
Fanwo revealed that the facility, identified as Dahallukitab Group of Schools, was operating illegally in a remote, bushy area without registration or the knowledge of relevant authorities and security agencies.
According to the statement, the attack took place late on April 26, 2026, when unknown gunmen invaded the premises and abducted 23 pupils along with the proprietor’s wife.
Security operatives, led by the Nigeria Police Force in Kogi State and supported by other agencies, responded promptly, resulting in the rescue of 15 victims.
The commissioner commended the gallantry and professionalism of the security personnel, noting that their coordinated efforts significantly reduced the scale of the incident.
He assured that intensified efforts are ongoing to rescue the remaining victims and bring those responsible to justice.
The government also expressed concern over the operation of unregistered institutions in isolated locations, warning that such practices pose serious security risks, especially under the current security challenges.
Fanwo emphasised that operating orphanages, schools, and similar facilities without proper registration and engagement with authorities undermines safety standards and exposes vulnerable children to avoidable dangers.
The government therefore urged operators to strictly comply with regulatory requirements and work with relevant authorities for proper security assessment and protection.
Reaffirming its commitment to safeguarding lives and property, the Kogi State Government assured residents that security operations remain active to bring the situation under full control.
