FG Rolls Out ₦10bn Housing Loan Scheme for Civil Servants, Signals New Welfare Push

The Federal Government has approved a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme aimed at expanding home ownership among civil servants, in a move officials say will boost workforce stability and productivity.

The Head of the Civil Service of the Federation, Didi Walson-Jack, disclosed this on Friday during a press briefing in Abuja, noting that the initiative will be implemented through the Federal Mortgage Bank of Nigeria and the Federal Government Staff Housing Loans Board.

According to Walson-Jack, the scheme is designed to improve access to affordable housing for government workers, with a direct impact on morale and efficiency.

“The Federal Government has approved a ₦10 billion housing loan scheme to improve access to home ownership for civil servants,” she said, adding that the programme reflects a broader commitment to strengthening the civil service.

She emphasised that secure housing plays a critical role in shaping worker performance and mindset.

“When a civil servant knows that their family has a place they can call their own, they come to work with more stability, more focus and more purpose,” she said.

Describing the initiative as part of a wider reform agenda, Walson-Jack noted that the programme goes beyond welfare and represents the administration’s governing philosophy.

She highlighted the collaborative effort behind the scheme, listing key institutions involved, including the Office of the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, the Budget Office of the Federation, and the Office of the Accountant General of the Federation.

“This is the power of collaboration across government  not working in silos, but institutions working in concert towards a shared national purpose,” she said, urging ministries, departments and agencies to sustain such synergy across governance.

Looking ahead to Workers’ Day, Walson-Jack said this year’s commemoration would hold special meaning for civil servants.

“For the first time in a long time, civil servants can point to concrete evidence that their contributions are valued at the highest levels,” she noted.

She added that the occasion should serve as both a reflection on past struggles and a renewed commitment to workers’ welfare.

“Workers’ Day is not just about remembering the struggles of the past; it is about renewing the promise for the future that those who serve this nation will be treated with justice, fairness and gratitude,” she said.

Walson-Jack also commended civil servants for their dedication and resilience despite challenging conditions, assuring them that their efforts have not gone unnoticed.

“To every civil servant, this is your time… your season of recognition, reward and renewed purpose,” she added.
