US Mission Warns Nigerians Against Visa Overstay, Says Violations May Affect Future Applicants

The United States Mission in Nigeria has again cautioned Nigerians to comply with proper travel regulations, warning that visa overstays could negatively impact other applicants.

In a statement posted on its X handle, the mission stressed that adherence to U.S. immigration laws is essential to ensuring fair access for genuine travellers. It noted that when individuals overstay their visas or violate travel conditions, it may influence how future applications from Nigeria are assessed.

“Visa overstays by Nigerian travellers can affect opportunities for their fellow citizens,” the advisory stated. “Strengthening compliance helps protect access for students, business travellers, and families who travel responsibly.”

The mission added that many Nigerians travel to the United States for education, business, tourism, and family visits, urging them to strictly observe visa conditions throughout their stay.

It also raised concerns about visa fraud and the misuse of travel documents, encouraging the public to report credible information through official consular fraud prevention channels.

Reaffirming its position, the mission said it remains committed to promoting safe and lawful travel between both countries while ensuring that compliant travellers are not penalised for the actions of others.
