Former Vice President Yemi Osinbajo has shared a light-hearted account of the unusual experience that led him to stop consuming alcohol.
In a video circulating on social media on Tuesday, Osinbajo recounted the incident that influenced his decision to quit drinking.
He explained that despite being a pastor, he occasionally drank red wine and beer.
“I like my red wine once in a while, and then I like my beer,” he said.
However, an encounter with a Danish colleague while serving in the justice sector of a United Nations mission in Mogadishu, Somalia, changed his perspective.
According to him, the incident occurred on a Sunday after he had just finished preaching at a fellowship and was heading to buy two cans of Heineken to take back to his room.
“I was coming back from the fellowship where I had preached, and I was just hoping to buy two canned Heineken and go to my room and read my Bible,” he said.
He recalled entering a restaurant within the UN compound where several international colleagues were seated and drinking.
“When they saw me, they hid their drinks,” he added.
Curious, Osinbajo approached one of his Danish colleagues and asked why he was hiding his whiskey. The colleague reportedly replied, “You are the priest, and we cannot be drinking around the priest.”
Osinbajo said the moment struck him deeply, which he interpreted as a message from God, making him reflect on the biblical principle: “All things are lawful for me, but not all things are expedient.”
He stated that from that day onward, he stopped consuming alcohol completely.
