Workers Are Nation’s Engine, Not Mere Tools — Atiku Tells Federal Government

Former Vice President Atiku Abubakar has urged the Federal Government to recognise Nigerian workers not merely as tools for economic development but as essential partners in nation-building.

In a statement commemorating the 2025 Workers’ Day on Thursday, Atiku praised the resilience and dedication of Nigerian workers, calling them the "indomitable engine" driving the country toward prosperity despite enduring persistent hardship and inadequate wages.

“At a time of widespread economic challenges, Nigerian workers have continued to shoulder the weight of our national ambitions with silent heroism,” he stated. However, he lamented that the government and policymakers have failed to adequately support this commitment with meaningful action and justice.

Atiku emphasised the need for increased accountability from those in power, describing the labour force as “the heart and strength of the nation.” He called for stronger protections for workers’ rights and welfare, urging both the government and private employers to uphold the dignity and entitlements of every worker.

“The labour force is the soul of our nation. It is both the face and the force of the people,” he said. “Governments and employers must implement safeguards that ensure workers are treated with the respect and fairness they deserve.”

He concluded by calling on leaders to adopt the spirit of this year’s Workers’ Day theme by treating workers as equal stakeholders in the nation’s development. “I urge policymakers to engage the labour force not as a mere instrument, but as an equal partner in our collective journey toward national greatness,” Atiku added.
